The generational replacement of the toll system for lorries was a good investment for the government. Compared to the original microwave technology, the Czech Republic saved almost CZK 1 billion on the operating cost of the electronic toll system last year. In addition, toll revenues increased by CZK 573 million year-on-year, despite the negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the entire European transport sector.

As of 1 January 2021, based on an amendment to Regulation of the Government 240/2014 Coll. and Decree No. 470/2012 Coll., several important changes in the electronic toll system for vehicles over 3.5 tons will come into effect. Among other things, toll rates, the amount of discounts and several other parameters will change. The network of toll roads will be extended by two newly opened motorway sections.

Exactly a year ago, a satellite toll system for vehicles with a maximum permissible weight of over 3.5 tons was successfully launched. Thanks to massive measures, the world's first generational replacement of the toll system took place without major traffic complications and without any downtime in toll collection. The Czech Republic saved approximately 1 billion crowns in operation over the period of 12 months.

During the first half of this year, the new toll system revealed a total of 135,000 toll incidents (violations of rules by carriers). The most common offence committed by drivers is an incorrectly set number of axles, driving an unregistered vehicle or an insufficient credit in the prepay toll mode. On weekdays, the new toll system checks up to 250,000 trucks and buses per day.

In June 2020 carriers paid the total amount of CZK 977.99 million for driving on toll roads. It represented an increase of 6.85% compared to the same period of 2019. The year-on-year growth in collected tolls was brought about by two extra working days compared to 2019, a revival of transit freight traffic through the Czech Republic and revenues from newly charged 1st category roads.

To minimize the spread of coronavirus, the toll system operator has taken the following measures.

The satellite toll system has confirmed the assumptions and generates more funds for the Czech Republic on tolls than the original microwave system. The total of 2,409 km of toll roads and motorways achieved the toll collection of CZK 948 mil. (compared to CZK 894 mil. in 2019), which represents an increase of 6.01%.
